Breathe: The Film
Breathe: The Film
The movie 'Breathe' is based on a true story that was recently released in cinemas all over England. 'Breathe' was directed by Andy Serkis and produced by Jonathan Cavendish (the son of the main characters Robin and Diana Cavendish).
The movie is about a man Robin Cavendish (the main character) contracting the disease polio whilst on holiday in Africa during the 1960's. It also looks at his journey through life whilst suffering with the disease until his death. Robin managed to change the laws put against disabled people mainly those with Polio.
At the beginning of the story we see Robin as young , wealthy and able-bodied Englishman who was living life to the fullest until he met a young woman called Diana who was also from a rich background in England.
They later got married and went to Africa where she fell pregnant with their first child.
When they were Africa the symptoms of Polio started to appear from the moment when he was playing tennis with a friend and in the night he started to feel strange and came down with a fever. Shortly, after noticing these symptoms he went to his doctor and fainted, so the doctor had to rush him to the hospital.
Once at the hospital, Robin began to feel numb all over his body and couldn't breathe and from the onwards the doctors say he had polio.
After being told that he had Polio, Robin, his wife, doctor and friend went with him back to England so he could have specialist treatment there.
Once he arrived in England he got rushed to a hospital where they look after people who have Polio.
He spent about over a year in the hospital and his wife Diana would visit him regularly with their son John.
He couldn't move or speak and want to die but his wife kept coming almost everyday to support him and tell him that he should stay alive because of their son and he decided to listen to her.
He said he wanted to get out of there so she helped him to leave after she found a house for them to live at in the countryside.
When he left, it took a while for them to get adjusted to the new environment along with his wife as she was learning to change the pipe which is connected to (his throat so he can breathe) to and electric ventilator.
Whilst at his new his new he began to think of ways he could interact with his son so he asked his friend locally to design a specialised chair which could move.
With that chair he was able to go to places that were further away from his house for a short amount of time until his friend was able to increase the amount of time he could spend outside his house.
After the adjustments mad to the chair, Robin and his family were able to go back to Africa and Spain.
When they came back from their holidays, Robin began to take things seriously and thought about what he could for the other people who were suffering from Polio. A doctor was so fascinated about Robin's survival with Polio that he took him to Germany to talk to the Germans about how he survived but before he did he went to a hospital there that looked after patients with the disease.
To his surprise he saw that patients were not look after in the same way like he was back in England. They were confined in metal containers that were stacked slightly upon each on either side of the wall, they seemed like prisoners who unable to see life outside the hospital.
It was almost as if the doctors wanted them to be hidden away from the outside world as they would scare people, but Robin decided to change that.
So, Robin and the doctor came up with an idea of inventing more specialist chairs with ventilators attached to them so they can see the outside world rather than being confined to a hospital bed and not allowed outside the hospital.
With the help of a few people those chairs were built and given to the people at the hospital were Robin was and for the first time since they were diagnosed with the disease, they were able to see the outside world. From then onwards, Robin became a huge inspiration to those who were disabled as well as those who had Polio.
Towards the end we see Robin grow into old age along with his wife and son and during that stage he begins to feel like he wants to die and arranges a party to be held in honour of him before he dies.
He then arranges with the doctor and the doctor helps him out.
In the end Robin dies and leaves behind his wife and son.
Overall, the movie shows the downfalls to having the disease, people not accepting disabled people in society, and then finally accepting disabled people and understanding how they feel. The movie is very inspirational as we see how Robin has come to terms with his illness and has achieved many things out of it.
