Fruitvale Station

Fruitvale Station

The movie Fruitvale station is based on real story that took about the unlawful killing of a young black man in America at a train station.

From the movie, we able to identify representations of stereotypes and issues that take place in America, gang rivalry and representations of ethnicity.

Representations of stereotypes
The stereotypes that are shown in the film involve a non-married couple e.g. the main character Oscar with his girlfriend and his daughter, clothing e.g. the way Oscar and his friends were dressed, selling drugs e.g. when he met up with a friend to sell him drugs in order to get money and a young man in prison e.g. the main character Oscar.

Representations of issues
The issues that are included in the film are poverty e.g. when he lost his job and struggled to pay his bills for they were due and when he needed to pay for his sister's bills but he had just lost his job, police brutality e.g. The scene when Oscar was on the train and the police officer received a call about a disturbance on the train and told his team to escort Oscar and his friends off the train when they didn't do anything and started beating them up and handcuffed them , racism ( links back to the police arresting Oscar and his friends ) and murder e.g. when the police officer shot him dead in the last scene.

Gang Rivalry
Gang rivalry was shown in the final scene when Oscar and his friends saw the guy he knew from prison and started fighting.

Representation of Ethnicity
By there being a biracial couple (Oscar who is a young black man and his girlfriend a young hispanic woman) in the film, it shows the struggles that both ethnicities face in society, such as both of them working in low paid jobs, living in large families etc.
