Dizzee Rascal - Dream analysis
Dizzee Rascal - Dream analysis
The setting of the music video is taken from a TV show that used
be shown in the 20th century called 'Watch with Mother'.
At the start of the music video we see a middle class woman
playing a piano and introducing the song along with Dizzee Rascal jumping out
of a box rapping his verse. When comparing the music video to the TV show, it is almost as if the woman is portraying ',Mother' and Dizzee Rascal along with the background dancers/puppets are the characters within a story that she is about tell (which is his story, but being told by himself).
Shortly, after he starts his verse, a few background dancers
appeared and it was almost as if they were telling a story. There was a
difference in the way he and the dancers/characters appeared; he appeared as
himself but the background dancers/characters were dressed as puppets and
had strings attached to them, so it was almost as if they were being controlled
by something (the government).
There was also representations of negative stereotypes of
black people and the working class.
Negative stereotypes of black people shown in the video
included things such as causing chaos in the streets whether its night or day
and police having to be called deal with the situations, teenage moms who are
also lone parents, unemployed youth and negative stereotypes of the working
class include things such alcoholics and being unemployed e.g. from the scene where
there was an alcoholic being arrested for causing a disturbance in the street.
The middle class woman appears in the video as her actual
size as compared to Dizzee Rascal and the other characters, for they appear
much smaller than her. They probably appear this way to show each other’s
position in society and whose ideas and voice are projected onto society as
ways to live.
By setting the video in this style, it is almost as if he is
trying to let the audience become more aware about the way society is structured
in terms of the opinion leaders (those in position of power who aim to persuade
an audience of their point of view) e.g. the conservative politicians may tell
the newspaper editors to focus on their views when producing newspapers for the
public to read and their target audience are the working class by trying to get
them to change their ways and follow the ways of the conservative party as well as telling the story about his life and how he made it to fame.
When analysing the lyrics, you can see that juxtaposition is used by looking at Dizzee's verses and comparing it to the chorus. In verse 1 he talks about his life before the fame, then the chorus talks about being happy and that you should have a dream, in the second paragraph he talks about deciding to make his dream come true and finally in the last verse he advices his fans and those viewing the music video to peruse their dreams and change their ways.
