Snapchat loses £650m after Rihanna condems firm for allowing ad 'shaming' domestic violence victims

Earlier last week, the social media company snapchat have lost £650m after the singer Rihanna sued them for allowing an advert for the game 'would you rather' to 'shame' domestic violence victims.

In the ad, it asks players of the game if they would like to either, 'Slap Rihanna' or ' Punch Chris Brown'.

Players of the game/ members of the public, domestic violence victims and Rihanna would realise that these questions are referring to the incident that took place between Rihanna and Chris Brown in 2009, where he beat Rihanna up.

Rihanna responded on Thursday on her Instagram story saying snapchat was not her favourite app, and she was trying to figure out "what the point was with this mess."

Her remark sent the share price value of Snapchat parent company, snap, down by nearly 4 per cent - erasing nearly $800m from the company's market value.

The musician, who is one of the bestselling artists of all time, said she was "trying to figure out what the point was with this mess."

She proceeded to defend domestic violence excluding herself from the narrative by saying, "This isn't about my personal feelings... but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven't made it out yet...you let us down!".

Snapchat, who has blocked the heavily criticised game from advertising on its platform, also said the ad was published "in error" and was taken down immediately.

The firm said, "The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we become aware."

This is not the first time Snapchat have gotten into issues involving celebrities. Recently, snapchat shared their new update which caused problems for the users including Kylie Jenner. Kylie Jenner helped wipe away $1bn from snapchat based on this problem.

Since we are living in a society where we respect each other's thoughts and feelings, it should not have to lead to a celebrity such as Rihanna suing a company over an advert which makes fun of a serious incident that took place between herself and Chris Brown years ago. I think that Snapchat and other social media platforms should already be aware of those issues and how sensitive they may be to people and not have to be sued in order to make those changes or admit that they wrong for advertising those things.
