Key terms to use when analysing video games

PEGI stands for the Pan - European Game Information.

It is a age rating system that was established to help European parents make decisions on buying computer games. 

It was launched in spring 2003 and replaced a number of national age rating systems with one single system.

MMORPG stands for Massively Multi-player Online Role-Playing game and it is where many players can be involved in the virtual world of the game at one time.

Persistent Worlds is a feature of MMORPG games, meaning that the game world continues even when the gamer is not part of it. in this way the virtual world replicates the real world.

CRPG stands for Computer Role-Playing Game and it's when there are fewer players in and  a non-persistent world. The interactive experience crosses genres.

Augmented reality is a computer generated content overlaid on a real world environment commonly used in video games. Augmented reality hardware comes in many forms, including devices that you can carry, such as hand-held displays and devices you wear, such as headsets and glasses.

Avatar is the name given to the player's representation of themselves within the game.

Transgressive Behaviour is the  behaviour that goes beyond the norms of social acceptability.


Different types of games

Simulation - computerized recreation of a real world activity

Strategy - a game which tests the player's tactical decision making skills

Puzzle game - a game involving a puzzle  

RPG - Role Playing Game

MMORPG - Massively multiplayer online role playing game

Adventure game - an interactive game in which the player assumes the role of the protagonist

Casual games - A casual game is a video game targeted at or used by casual gamers.

Sandbox games - a game where the player is free to explore a virtual world in a non- liner fashion

Rhythm action game - is a genre of music-themed action video game that challenges a player's sense of rhythm.

Beat 'Em up games - simulated combat game where the player beats up other characters within the game

Genre of games
Action- involves a lot of movement made by the characters 

Combat- fighting between the characters involved in the game where both players control the characters.

Fantasy-  a game that features imaginary characters 

Survival Horror-is a subgenre of video games inspired by horror fiction that focuses on survival of the character as the game tries to frighten players with either horror graphics or scary ambience.

Sci-Fi -Science fiction based games. Include futuristic/ technological characters

Retro - imitative of a style or fashion from the recent past
