Manchester Arena attack: Homeless 'hero' Chris Parker who stole from victims is jailed
A homeless man who goes by the name of Chris Parker has been jailed for four years for stealing from the victims of the Manchester Arena Bombing early last year.
Before being jailed, he was called a 'Hero' because helped an injured girl escape from the scene.
However, CCTV footage taken from the Manchester bombing attack, shows that he was wondering around victims and taking their personal belongings which included a phone and bank card.
At Manchester Crown Court last month, he admitted to stealing a mobile phone and purse from two victims.
Prosecutors have said that he will not be receiving the money which was raised for him by the public and that the money will be given back to the donors.
Following sentencing, Supt Chris Hill from Greater Manchester Police, said:
"No matter what personal circumstances you might find yourself in, to steal from injured and terrified innocent people is deplorable."Parker exploited these people when they were at their most vulnerable and needed the help of those around them."I cannot begin to imagine what they have been through and I want to thank them for their courage."
This story is taken from ITV news which features news articles from across the country.
This story is similar to story which about the man who lied about having family in Grenfell tower.
According to the newspaper called 'the telegraph', he was a serial conman(which means he has committed lots of fraudulent crimes) who lied about his family being amongst those who died in the fire at Grenfell tower so he could receive the money which was meant for the victims and to also meet Prince Charles.
He had posed as a victim for two weeks and was given around £12,500 from charities and Kensington and Chelsea Council.
The conviction comes amid fears that more people could have attempted to claim that they had family members that were involved in the tragedy or personal belongings so they could receive money in return as compensation.
The Metropolitan Police said in September, they were investigating a series of other cases where individuals had fraudulently attempted to claim money.
However, these two stories are different for a number of reasons:
- The Grenfell Tower fire started as the result of a fridge catching fire and the Manchester bombing attack was because of a suicide bomber.
- The man arrested for stealing from victims involved in the Manchester Attack was homeless and the man who lied about having family in the Grenfell Tower was a serial conman.
- The homeless man never lied about being injured during the attack, but stole from those who were injured, whereas the conman lied about having family in the Grenfell Tower.
finally, the homeless man admitted to what he had done, whereas the conman never admitted to what he had done but was proven guilty.
This story also represents the issues that have been going on in society for the past year such as the increase in homeless and increase in crime (people taking advantage of certain tragedies so they can get what they want e.g. money).
I think that stealing from those who are injured or dead is wrong from tragedies or attacks, however the government should come up with a solution to the increase in homelessness rather than worrying about Brexit and other unnecessary issues and leaving the homeless to die on streets especially in winter.
