Selfless benefits mum who only has one pair of shoes defends blowing £2K on Christmas presents for her six kids
Claire Young, a mother of six from England says she spends £2,000 on Christmas presents for her children even though she's on benefits and believes they are entitled to have luxurious gifts.
"The average child gets £100 of gifts at Christmas, but Claire Young spends around £330 on each of her six children."
'I start in January and save all the year through,' she explained.
'Put £50 in a pot every week and at the end of November I have a nice amount to go and buy Christmas presents.'
'The mum explained she buys 66 presents - 11 for each child - but has been criticised for being 'over the top'.
She said: 'Christmas is only once a year that’s how I see it and me and my partner don’t get each other anything it’s all about the kids.'
She says she doesn't work because she has M E which is a chronic fatigue syndrome which means she feels tired and unwell.
Claire also gets support from her partner as he gave up work to become her carer and look after their children.
The TV presenter on the show 'This Morning', Holly, mentioned that ,'This is tax payers' money the reason you’re on benefits is not to buy luxuries'.
Claire replied back saying that even though her and her children are benefits, it should be fair that they also get to celebrate Christmas.
The story is from the daily tabloid newspaper called the Mirror.
The Mirror is a left wing newspaper which it produces content based on the views of the labour party. The labour party are all about equality and wanting to help the people. However, they do express some right wing views as well.
The stories/content featured the Mirrors' website are more heart-breaking stories which the public can either relate to or show emotion towards, whereas compared to the 'Daily Mail' , they would feature right wing content such as problems which affect politics and the economic system, stories from around the world and a few heart-breaking stories along with stories about the rich and famous.
From the title of the article, it says "selfless benefits mum", which means the woman is not like every other person on benefits as she cares more about her children and does not make it seem like she enjoys claiming benefits since she can't work.
On the other hand, if the article was featured on a right wing newspaper like the Daily Mail, they would make the article appear negative and says something like "selfish, lazy woman spends the money she claims in benefits on herself". People reading that newspaper would start to have negative opinions against her for doing what she did.
Overall, I think that it is quite shocking when hearing about people using the money they claim in benefits to buy expensive gifts rather than using their money for the things they need to sort out such as bills etc., but on the other hand if they feel that way then it's their choice to do so.
This story also shows a twist in the representation of class as it is not only the rich who can buy the most expensive things.
